May & June in Clear Lake, Iowa: Lake Season Begins

May and June mark the transition from spring to full summer in Clear Lake, Iowa. The lake is open, the Farmers Market is running, downtown starts its weekly street party, and the Surf Ballroom's summer concert calendar fills up. If you're looking for a lake weekend before peak tourist season hits, this is it.

Central Gardens of North Iowa  â€” May 1

Central Gardens of North Iowa opens for the season on May 1 — free, open daily, dawn to dusk through October 31. The grounds cover nearly three acres with 20+ themed gardens: Butterfly Garden, Wildflower Garden, Bee Happy Discovery Garden, Rose Garden, Wetland, Woodlands, and more, all connected by winding brick pathways and bridges. More than 22,000 flowers are planted each season, the design changes year to year, and the whole thing is maintained by volunteers — which makes it feel genuinely community-rooted rather than curated-for-tourists. Admission is always free. Throughout summer the gardens also host more than 50 free concerts, events, and educational programs, so it's worth checking their calendar at centralgardensnorthiowa.com before your visit. It's a ten-minute walk from Surf & Serenity House.

Clear Lake Walleye Classic — May 2–3

The walleye fishing in Clear Lake, Iowa is some of the best in the Midwest — and the first weekend of May puts that reputation on full display.

The Walleye Classic, hosted by the Clear Lake Fishing Club, is the largest walleye tournament in Iowa. Up to 100 teams compete in a catch-and-release format over two days, with launch and weigh-in at the Lynne Lorenzen/Ventura Access. The top prize is $2,500, with an 80% payback across the top 25 places. Public weigh-ins and the awards ceremony take place at City Park at 3 p.m. both days — worth watching even if you're not fishing.

Clear Lake's walleye population is excellent right now. The lake has a protected slot limit (all walleye 17–22 inches must be released), so the fishery stays strong year after year. If you want to wet a line outside of tournament weekend, pick up a license and local advice at Clear Lake Bait & Tackle before you head out.

Iowa Walleye Challenge — May 1 through June 30

Running parallel to tournament season, the Iowa Walleye Challenge is a statewide catch-and-release contest open to any angler. Entry is $25, the app is MyCatch, and prizes top $5,000. Clear Lake is one of the best places in the state to participate — just download the app, photograph your catch on a measuring board, and release it. Clear Lake Bait & Tackle can help you get set up.

Surf Ballroom Concert: Matt Vee and the Killer Vees — May 8

The Surf Ballroom's spring concert season kicks off in earnest with a Neil Diamond tribute on May 8. Matt Vee and the Killer Vees bring a full-production show covering Diamond's catalog — the kind of crowd-pleasing, singalong night the Surf was built for. Doors at 7 p.m., show at 8 p.m. Tickets available at surfballroom.com.

Clear Lake Farmers Market Opens — May 17, 2026

The Clear Lake Farmers Market opens for the season on May 17 and runs every Saturday through October. This isn't a curated artisan pop-up — it's a working farmers market where locals and weekenders do their weekend shopping, which is exactly what makes it worth visiting.

Market Details:

  • When: Every Saturday, 9 AM–noon (May 17 through October)
  • Where: Surf Ballroom parking lot (<2 blocks from Surf & Serenity House)
  • What: 50+ vendors, live music, food trucks, kids' activities

Show up early for the best selection. Grab coffee from a food truck (or take a to-go cup from the house), pick up locally grown produce, and watch Clear Lake ease into its weekend. It's a genuinely good hour to spend and less that two blocks from the house.

Central Gardens Plant Sale — Third Saturday in May

Central Gardens of North Iowa typically hosts its annual Plant Sale & Gardening Fair the third Saturday in May. Native plants, perennials, gardening supplies, and expert advice — admission is free. The gardens themselves are worth walking through any weekend in May or June. Spring blooms are in full swing, paths are quiet, and it's a peaceful hour before summer crowds arrive.

Memorial Day Weekend — Unofficial Start of Lake Season

Memorial Day weekend is when Clear Lake officially shifts into summer mode. The lake is open, boats are in the water, and locals start spending evenings lakeside. Restaurants get busier, the lakefront trail picks up foot traffic, and downtown begins to find its summer rhythm. It's still manageable — but you're getting a preview of what July and August will look like.

Surf Ballroom Concert: Eli Young Band — June 5

One of the bigger shows of the early summer: the Eli Young Band plays the Surf Ballroom on Friday, June 5. Known for radio hits across more than two decades of Texas country and mainstream country, this is a show that tends to sell. Doors at 7 p.m. Grab tickets early at surfballroom.com.

Thursdays on Main Kicks Off — May 28, Running Through August 13

2026 Season: May 28 – August 13 (no event July 2 due to the July 4th Celebration)
Time: 6:00–9:00 PM
Location: Downtown Clear Lake, Main Avenue

Thursdays on Main is Clear Lake's weekly summer street party, and it's one of the best free events in North Iowa. Main Avenue closes to traffic, food trucks line the street, vendors set up shop, and a live band plays at the intersection of Main and 4th Street starting at 7 p.m.

What happens each week: live music on the street stage, the "Mojo's Main Ave Cruise-In" classic car show, bounce houses and a Strider bike course for kids, 60+ craft and goods vendors, 20+ food trucks, extended retail hours in downtown shops, and select weeks a free outdoor movie in the park at 9 p.m.

This isn't a tourist event designed to extract dollars — it's a community gathering that visitors are welcome at. Locals bring lawn chairs, kids run around with ice cream, and the music drifts through downtown as people shop and catch up with neighbors. It's free, it's relaxed, and you can walk from Surf & Serenity House as downtown is just 3 blocks away.
